It was an honor to paint during the Día de los Muertos festival in Fruitvale. Nothing beats painting with my brother @lacocinaloca This piece was based on a piece by cartoonist and satirist José Guadalupe Posada. This piece is titled “Ride With It”. We wanted to to create a symbol for anyone living with grief. We wanted to inspire people to be a little more gentle to themselves. Moving on doesn’t mean forgetting. The problem with the phrase “moving on” is that it often feels as if we’re being told to forget our loved ones. I encourage everyone to say they are “riding with” the loss/grief. Sometimes you’re the horse (feeling the weight of the loss on your back) and sometimes you’re the rider(maintaining your emotions, but knowing you can fall off at any moment). Ultimately, we must ride with our grief and move forward. Grief is extremely complex. Our experience with grief is incorporated into our lives, not something we can just ride past. People will have all kinds of advice about how you should move on but they, however, cannot determine that for you. You can go at your own pace. Whatever pace that is, It’s perfect. You’re PERFECT.
